Design a Contemporary Kitchen

Design a Contemporary Kitchen Contemporary kitchens utilize simplicity and space to create and uncluttered, ‘clean and sleek’ feel. If you want to design your own, you’ll have to understand the contemporary kitchen style.Contemporary kitchens often aim to not look too much like a kitchen. As counter-intuitive as this may seem, the goal of a contemporary kitchen to look understated and stylish, while still maintaining kitchen functionality. Many times, appliances will be disguised as cabinets – it’s not unusual to see a fridge, dish washer or dehydrator hidden behind what looks like an ordinary cabinet, or slide out a drawer and find the whole unit is fixed and reveals a trash can or spice rack.A modern kitchen often uses flat-front cabinets and drawers, in wood steel or lacquer. Accessories are kept to a minimum, counter tops are square-edged and light fixtures are simple but decorative. Contemporary Kitchen Style Borrowing from the modernist design movement, contemporary kitchens utilize high functionality and streamlined surfaces with monochromatic color schemes to create the desired ‘clean and sleek’ effect. To remain functional, a modern kitchen will incorporate aspects of traditional kitchens to remain livable, whilst maintaining the desired aesthetic. Use Steel and White Avoid blacks when designing your new kitchen, as they are harder to blend. Both steel and white combine nicely with warm wood tones (blending the traditional with the modern) and other colors that you currently have, allowing you to bring a contemporary edge with relative ease.Whichever colors you do choose, it’s wise to follow a 60/30/10 rule, with 60% being the dominant color, 30% a secondary color and 10% an accent color. Bringing Contemporary to your Kitchen Make sure to eliminate clutter by tucking appliances behind cabinets and drawers, and keeping excess food in the fridge, cupboards or pantry. Remember, clutter is the enemy of sleek and simple. A simple fruit bowl on the counter will set the design off.Next to your fruit bowl, you might want to show off one or two expensive gadgets, such as a high-end blender or juicer. We want to be clean, but a good centerpiece or focal point is essential to keep the style interesting, rather than just dull and lifeless.
